Umeå’s Capital of Culture year is a joint venture with the four northernmost Swedish counties and Sápmi (the lands of the Sámi people). Sápmi stretches through northern Norway, Sweden and Finland and all the way out to the Kola Peninsula in Russia. These northern lands will be a natural part of a European dimension, promoting cross-border cultural meetings and long-term collaborations. The northern region has always been regarded as a borderless country that is the home of the Sámi, the EU’s only indigenous people. Ubmeje (the Sámi word for Umeå) is a part of Sápmi and the history, culture, occupations, religion and languages of its people.
